hold...

An ellipsis is an omission filled by context.  In film, for instance, a story is skipped because it is obvious enough or a story is concealed to create mystery.  The grammatical ellipsis is sometimes called a suspension point and may signal an unfinished thought, a leading sentence, a trailing off to silence, an echoing voice, or a redundancy.

If an ellipsis can prevent something from continuing or being in force, then the ellipsis that follows “hold” can suspend a shock as well as a sanctuary.  “Hold…” has a capacity to seize and tend; detain and shelter.
